Although we don't have a
great deal of commercial air traffic, I would say we have a military air
show almost every day at 10:00 and again at 3:00. FSM is the home base
of the 188th F-16 Flying Group...a guard unit. Currently, they have
approximate 12 f-16's that are used regularily and daily. To the south
of the airport, is the HAWG MOAs (military operating areas) where the
f-16's paractice their firing runs. I am not sure if the general public
can view the practice runs, but if you're interested, I can check. In
addition to the daily F-16 airshows, we do get a great deal of military
transit-c130's from Little Rock, T-1s from Vance AFB, T38s from Vance
and Columbus AFB, T-37s from where ever they live. Occasionally, we are
also home to C141s, C5s and assorted other military. We do have a
varied selection of private jet aircraft. The best place to view the
airshows is right off I-540 on Old Greenwood Road...you'll be on final
to runway 7. When landing runway 25, the best spot is off Towson on
66th street (also the tower access road). This spot will put you next
to the approach end of RWY25...be sure to wear ear protection as the
F16s are LOUD!! If you need more info, just e-mail." Contributor: Marilyn Gore

Runway 27 Left with West/Northwesterly winds: "Just about the best place to watch planes without any hastles with "No Parking" or security is in the parking lot of the Starlight Inn at the intersection of Lawrence and Manheim Rd. Take the I90/O'Hare to Manheim Rd. (South Exit). Take Manheim Rd. south to the first light which is Lawrence Av. Make a left and another immediate left to drive into the parking lot. This is the final approach for Runway 27 Left. A very busy approach when winds are from the west/northwest, especially with cargo and international airliners. An excellent side view of planes from 200 ft. to landing can be seen which offers great photo opportunities." Contributor: Bob LaCursia
"I... have found that many people park on Irving Park Road (RT. 19) on the south side of the Field to watch aircraft. The area is about half a mile west of Mannheim Road on Irving Park. You can exit off the Tristate Tollway on Irving Park west. This site offers a spectacular view of approaching aircraft for they pass directly overhead on final and are probably no more than 100 feet overhead." Contributor: Todd Parfitt
"Take Mannheim Rd. northbound exit from I-190. Proceed north for two or three lights until you get to the light at Higgins Rd. (Ill. Rt. 72) Turn left here and drive about 1/2 mile. Park in the office building parking lots and walk further west. You can watch 22R arrivals from here." Contributor: Matt Kranz
"On Elmhurst Road past I-90 and before Irving Park Road (Rt. 19) There are numerous office buildings with lots that you can park in and watch the planes. When coming up on Elmhurst, look for the planes and park your car accordingly. There is a spot right before Devon, that, if the planes are landing there, they come in under 100 ft above ground. After Devon, there are offices and lots all around to park." Contributor: Jason Janczak

"As far as MSP goes, if you park on the very top of the parking ramp, you are right in middle of 30L and 30R. What a view!" Contributor: Timothy Desmond
"Perpendicular to Post Road, next to the freeway, is another small road. You can park on this road and the planes will fly right over your head, just as in Wayne's World." Contributor: Pete Nelson
"At MSP 12R, you can be at the perimeter fence: Take 28th Avenue Exit off of Crosstown Highway 62 and turn right at the end of the road." Contributor: Ted Cochran
"Get right up to the fence and enjoy the blast from that B-747's four JT9D Turbofans! Guaranteed to make you turn away. Take the 28th Ave exit off the Crosstown (MN62) Go south past Metro Airport Comm (MAC) office, MAC snow removal equip. bldg. until road ends at "T". Turn left. Go until road ends at Hangar. Turn left. Go past the old hangar building (MESABA Air) until you get to fence. You're there - the taxiway (E10) at the edge of 12L. Get out and get blown away as they spool up for immediate departures. Turn around and follow the road past the new control tower, business jet terminal to MAC paint shop. Good spot at gate to observe ground operations." "From MN55 take Fort Snelling exit. Signs to Fort guide you east, you go southwest to Bloomington Rd. Stay on Bloomington Road past the polo field and numerous Defense Dept. bldgs until road ends at gate. You're at the touchdown zone of 30R." "Watch ground crews in action at aircraft while boarding in process. Take usual MSP terminal exit off MN5. Get in far right lane and immediately exit on Glumack Drive. Go past the car rental lots and post office. At stop sign go straight toward the Regional airlines terminal. Continue straight past the Regional terminal to taxi/limo waiting area. Don't enter waiting area, turn right to small permit parking area under the Green concourse. Planes just on other side of fence. Ear protection needed when they do their push-back!! Or - bring your bike and park at the meters at Regional terminal. Bike around concourse area, NWA facility, etc." Contributor: Jim Attwood

and see the runways from the side. Contributor: John Vogel
"The west side vantage points can now be reached via Satellite parking lots B and C. They are cheap and have a great view of landing aircraft. A great spot at the other end is on the knoll near Berkeley High School. It has a commanding view of the airport, and aircraft taking off or landing close by. As with virtually all great vantage points, this one is clearly marked with signs reading NO PARKING OR STOPPING ANYTIME. Park legally elsewhere and walk in, taking a lawn chair!" "I live in Omaha, Nebraska and go down to our airport to plane watch
every 2-3 weeks. It may not seem like it, but Omaha has lots of flights
every day. We have 16 airlines and over 150 flights a day. Omaha is a
great place to see aircraft from the larger airlines. We get lots of
737, DC-9, MD-80, 727, B1900, EMB-120, F100, Canadair RJ, 757, and
United's evening DC-10 to Denver. A great spot is on the top (sixth
floor) of the parking garage. From the middle of the east side you can
see both concourses, the commuter terminal, the general aviation area,
all of the big runway, and most of the other runway. You can also see
planes approaching from far away. 1:45p-4:20p is a good time with many
flights. There is a road around the airport that goes to the general aviation, but you can't stop on that road. There is usually a police car that patrols the road or sits on the side of the road that will chase you away. If you come at the right time of the day, you can see Comair or Frontier. Occasionally the 100th RJ comes through Omaha. I saw it just the other day. Omaha's airport may not seem like much, but it really is a great spot to see the domestic airline planes. It is a great place to get a picture of a 757 or DC-10 with the bluffs in the background, or the Omaha skyline." Contributor: Jason Seiple

"The observation tower in the terminal was closed, possibly
permanently, after a severe storm this summer. A good alternate
vantage point is the employee lot east of the terminal, which has
a good view of Runway 17L/35R. It's never full and security
(usually) doesn't care if you park and watch." Contributor: Andrew Abshier

"Go North on 169 highway, West on 46th St Exit.
Pull off on shoulder of road near the landing lights.
In the summer the planes land from the North about
150 feet over your head. Great place." Contributor: Steve Russell

"Exit 66 off I-90 just east of Rapid City. Exit the highway and stop at
the McDonalds. Grab a Big Mac and fries, sit outside, and hold on to
your Coke. The restaurant is right at the end of the runway! They even
have a drive-up window 50 feet off the ground (kidding :) When I was
there I saw a B-52 and lots of B-1's. Don't bother with the tour of the
AFB. The McDonalds is much better." Contributor:Eric Hansen

"At Dallas/Ft. Worth Int'l Airport, the...best spotting is when planes are
approaching from the south and taking off to the north. There are two sets of main runways on either side of the terminals. On the east side (closest to Dallas) there is a brand new observation parking area on East Airfield Drive at the south end of the runways. To get there from Hwy 183, take the Airport entrance and exit to the service road before you get to the toll booths. Turn right on East Airfield Drive and follow it around to the observation area. On the west side (closest to Ft. Worth) you can park in the West Reduced Rate Parking Lot and get some great views of landings and takeoffs, pretty much right in front of you. You have to pay to park here, but it's really cheap & shouldn't cost you more than a few bucks for a few hours." Contributor: RamRobb@aol.com

"There are two sites for viewing: One is on Rankin Road between Greens and Aldine-Westfield Roads, right near the Garret hangar. You will be just of the end of runway 14R/32L and adjacent to runway 14L/32R. You can also see activity from a distance on runways 8/26 and 9/27. There is ample parking. The other site is on Lee Road, 1/2 mile south of Will Clayton Parkway. A parking area puts you just under the approach to runway 27." Contributor: Allan Penl
"At IAH, another good vantage point is at the top of Terminal A (top level of parking garage-on the roof). This provides a good vantage point for traffic arriving/departing on runway 14L/R. Try to get there during a "Continental Flush," when a bank of CO's depart. On a good day, there may be quite a few planes holding for departure. Additionally, you can also catch arr./dep. traffic on runway 8/27. Lastly, United, USAir, and Southwest park right below you on the north side of the terminal. These three airlines are a small presence at the airport, but when at the gate, view are great (especially USAir and Southwest)." You do have to pay to park at this lot, but the view is usually worth it." Contributor: John Billings

When aircraft are arriving on 12R and departing 22, The best place to watch is from the parking lot and fence area behind some of the old buildings. Coming down Airport Blvd from the Terminal Area, turn left onto Telephone Road. Make the second available left (it's small street by the Owners Jet sign) Follow it two blocks to the end and there is a small parking lot to the left. You are at the approach end of 12R and the arriving aircraft will land about 100 ft from you. Takeoff's will start behind the terminal from 22 and cross midfield in fornt of you. You are also at the end of RWY 17. When 30L/4 is active there are two choices. Either continue down Telephone like for 12R, but keep going toward the corner of the airport and make a left at the light. There is a small end street to the left which is right under the RWY 4 approach end. Or you can continue down the road for about a 1 mile, and you will see a small grass field towards your left about 300 ft from the end of 30L. Contributor: Adam E. Miller

"The city of Milwaukee maintains a public park on the north side of the
airfield. It is called "Airport Park, and it overlooks most of the field.
The park is located north of Layton Avenue, one mile or so east of Howard
Avenue. This park is especially ideal deal for viewing flights that land
from the north. The aircraft are very low when viewed from this
vantagepoint. Just park the car on any city street near the park and walk
over. The area near the soccer goals is the best. Most of the flights in an out of Mitchell are Midwest Express DC-9's and MD-80's, as this is their hub. But there is also an assortment of 737's and an occaisonal DC-10 that is flown by Northwest to/from theTwin cities." Contributor: John Kotras
